Very Bad Fakes
Posted by Steve
This fake alert is more humorous than a warning. It's my understanding that there were redemptions in Upper Deck's Chronology Basketball for unsigned versions of one of the autograph inserts. Sadly, someone who received a few of these has decided to try their hand at the world of autograph forging. The result has gotta be the worst fake autographs I've seen in a long time so I don't think this will turn into a career for this person.
First, they tried faking a Steve Kerr signature. Unfortunately, the shaky forger inscribed it "5 tine chapion." Now my handwriting is pretty horrible too so i'd give him the benefit of the doubt with the "tine" part, but the "chapion" has no sign of an an "m" in there. If you look at the real one vs. the fake one, it actually makes me giggle at how bad it is.
Next, they tried a Sam Perkins signatures. It's equally shaky with the "Smooth" inscription. Apparently both fakes have been reported to eBay, as well as Upper Deck so they can get to the bottom of this one. I would assume that both of these fakes are so poor that buyers couldn't possibly be fooled...and if they were, they fully deserve it.

When you mentioned redemptions for unsigned cards, are you talking about the unsigned and uncut sheets? I haven't seen anything except those sheets and the one seller who said where he got it said it was from a shop with a UD contract and kept the sheet uncut.
Thanks,
Paul

Hey this is lagos the one that made the original post in beckett
looking at the scans side by side, it looks like the auto versions, have yellow/gold background compared to the fake autos.
The normal base cards are numbered to #/199 on the front.
Maybe these fake autos do come from one of those sheets since these cards don't have numbering. Maybe UD gave several different dealers these sheets. Found a scan of how the Steve Kerr should look like

Also like Paul mentions this statement is not true
"It's my understanding that there were redemptions in Upper Deck's Chronology Basketball for unsigned versions of one of the autograph inserts."

Speaking of "very bad fakes," has anyone seen the latest Coach's Corner auction? Funny how we'll see three posts in a month slamming bigboydsportscards3, but we never hear about the endless pile of festering trash offered by Coach's Corner's. Hmmmm...got to keep that ad revenue coming in I guess.

The unsigned versions of these autographs are from the uncut sheets, which I thought were offered through redemptions. Were these only given to a few dealers or through a redemption program?

Rick, can you please provide some more details? Is there a particular item or lot number that you can share that can be reviewed? Are you working from exemplars? Your post does not exactly connect the dots with your allegation. Please be more clear. Steve usually provides some decent visual examples when he is making his points. I have learned some things from the Big Daddy scenario.
...and thanks Lago for the knowledge!
