Another bigboydsportscards3 blog post
Posted by Steve

clemensreal.jpgA month or so has passed since Mr. Counterfeit card seller's name has come up and then on the same day, I get two emails. One from a SCD reader, telling me he purchased a 1984 Pawtucket Roger Clemens card that turned out to be fake. The other from my friend and Star Co. expert, Steve Taft, with a simple link to a ton of Star Co. fakes. What do these have in common? Both are about bigboydsportscards3, aka one of the biggest seller of counterfeit goods on eBay.

Here's the SCD reader email:

Hi, I was wondering if you know of any way to stop an ebay seller from continuosly auctioning off conterfeit 1984 TCMA Roger Clemens cards.
clemensreal2.jpgIn April 2007 I unknowingly purchased a fake 1984 TCMA Roger Clemens card from a seller called " Bigboydssportscards3 ". I paid $114.50  for the fake, but when I compared it to the other one I purchased at the minor league ballpark in 1984, I noticed clemensfake.jpgthe difference between the 2 cards. (editor's note: look at the above scans and notice the difference in boldness of the letters and the differences in how long the top of the "T's" in Pawtuckett extend...obviously, the real one is in the BGS holder with the snapshots positioned after the card they represent.)

I informed the seller, and demanded a refund, which I eventually received. But after notifying the seller that his card was in fact a fake, I noticed that he sold the same card on July 4th, on August 2, and again on September 29th.

clemensfake2.jpgNow he can't say that he isn't aware of the counterfeit cards. He purposely uses a private auction, so that you cannot contact the potential buyers to warn them of the counterfeit card.

And from listening to other Ebay'ers, who have informed Ebay of this matter. It is apparent that they are not willing to lift a finger.

If you could provide any kind of information on how to report this thief, I would really appreciate it.  Maybe your magazine could research the matter and run a story. Thanks, Dan Johnson.

Then the one from Steve Taft:

link to bigboyd fake star co. stuff

A current list of 35 cards, a virtual who's who of the counterfeit inventory.....

Did you ever think to test his DVD inventory....  Might he be selling counterfeit Disney or Warner Bros. DVD's?  Do you think Disney would chase him???

He's still selling all the fake Star Co. stuff (don't worry, he assured me a month ago that he was almost out of stuff). He's got fake minor league cards...same trend as with all the other stuff, take the card image, rebuild the fonts, but they don't match exactly and it's obvious when a real and fake are compared side by side. He's been accused of doctoring patch cards. He's been accused of re-sealing wax boxes and selling them (bigboyd acknowledges this happened but claims it was a supplier). What else? I don't need to write anymore on this because the emails, past blogs and scans speak for themselves.

What to do? Here's an idea, everyone that reads this, feel free to give a shout to Terry Boyd (513-779-2356) and let him know how you feel about his flooding eBay with fake stuff. More importantly, call the Cincinnati Computer Intelligence Unit at 513-946-6685 and the Cincinnati Police Dept. at 513-352-3578.

I have bought multiple items from Terry in the past... he's always been up front and professional... Maybe, he bought the cards and claims they are real... I know he buys lots of collections... I think it is in VERY POOR TASTE that someone would post a person's home phone number on a post that accuses accusations but does not have 100% proof. The guy has 112,000+ -- yes ONE HUNDRED AND TWELVE THOUSAND - POSITIVE EBAY COMMENTS.. I understand if you don't want to buy his product or are warning others to "watch out" posting a phone number on a blog is poor in judgment and taste...

Ok -- I did read all of the posts... sorry for jumping to conclusion early... obviously, you know the Star product well... I am not saying who is at fault.. but I would NOT hesitate in giving BigBoyd a positive reference for a deal... Like I said, he has 100,000+ -- POSITIVE ebay feedbacks.. **my last point" will stay the same... I think it is wrong to post a person's phone number on a blog/internet sight without his/her permission... if you have an individual who bought a card and is worried about it, I have no problem with an IM or private email... I guess that was my problem with the post.. RB

I would probably agree with your post about the phone number thing, but I have tried to work this out with Terry Boyd and have talked to him on the phone. He continues to deny knowing they are fakes and continues to sell the fake product despite myself and Steve Taft, who are both experts (and it's pretty obvious they are fakes from the images on the blog) telling him they are fakes. My opinion is he knows it and doesn't care, which I have restraint for someone like that. The number of ebay feedbacks is impressive, but looking at all the fake stuff he's sold, those numbers mean he's probably well into six figures of counterfeit sales.

Here's an email exchange that I had with bigboyd after I bought one of his counterfeit Clemens cards (you have to start at the bottom and work your way up). Fortunately for me, this was before he started using the private auctions to hide bidders' identities, and another eBay'er tipped me off before I sent payment. This guy is really a piece of work and I am going to call the Cincinnati computer crime unit. Also, the evidence on this guy is so overwhelming that I have no problem with you posting his home phone number, especially after you've tried to discuss with him yourself. Thanks for shining some light on this, Steve!!

Do any of the graded cards have the problem with the bottom of the W (i.e., flat, not pointed)? If you have a graded version of the card that has the same, flat-bottom W as the card from this listing, then I'd be less concerned with the authenticity of this card.

What I meant is we have had Clemens Pawtucket's graded before and not had a problem with them. We are one of the top graders of rookies in the country.. We actually have 4 Pawtucket Clemens in stock that are graded

Terry--

That's so disingenuous that it's absurd. I'm sure that you know as well as I do that eBay does not authenticate items that sellers list, and the fact that you've had cards graded before says nothing about whether this particular card is a fake, unless you can show me a Pawtucket Clemens that has the same flawed "W" that gave away this one. The fact that you did not object in the slightest to my backing out of the auction suggets strongly to me that you don't disagree that the card is counterfeit. Now of course, if you had this specific card graded and it passed Beckett or PSA, then I'd owe you (and I'd provide) an apology, but I suspect either that this card hasn't been submitted because you know that it's fake, or that it was submitted and rejected because it's fake. FYI, if I see this card relisted (and I have "favorite searches" that should pick it up), I'll both report the relisting to eBay and email any bidders to let them know that the card is not genuine. Again, if you have the card authenticated by Beckett or PSA, I'll apologize profusely and have nothing to say if I see the card relisted in a slab. I have to say that based on your feedback, I had expected a more responsible answer, and you won't have to worry about dealing with me on any transactions in the future.

If there was a problem with the card, ebay would remove the listing. We have had cards graded before and not had a problem with them.

Hi--

It's been brought to my attention that this card is a counterfeit. Attached are images of your card (from the listing), along with images of a GAI, a BCCG, and a PSA of the same card. Note that the bottom of the W in Pawtucket on your card is flat, and on the graded cards is pointed. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that this was an honest mistake, although I'm also told that this has been brought to your attention before. If you'd like to report this to eBay as a transaction that we agreed mutually not to complete, so that you get your listing fees refunded, I'll confirm that from my end. Please contact me with any questions, and please do not relist this card. Thanks.

By way of postscript to my posting a moment ago, when Terry did relist the card (using a private auction so that I couldn't notify the bidders), I had the following ridiculous exchange with eBay, which shows that eBay has no interest whatsoever in putting a stop to the sale of counterfeit cards even when the evidence is crystal clear. Very, very disappointing. Again, need to read from bottom up.

-------------------------------------------------

Hi--

Your response completely misses (or ignores) the point of my original email. I do not have any question about this item's authenticity. It is a known counterfeit, and the seller has been notified by multiple eBay members that it is a known counterfeit, yet he has continued to list and relist the card, finally using a private listing so that no one could inform the winning bidder that he was purchasing a counterfeit card. I was lucky that in the listing that I won, another eBayer sent me an email and pointed out the
fraud before I sent payment, and when I raised the issue with the seller, he immediately released me from the transaction (which says to me that he was not at all surprised by my response). I certainly don't expect eBay to
police the authenticity of items that sellers list in the first instance, but I do expect eBay to police a known counterfeiter that is brought to its attention by multiple members of the community. I have to say that your response here has dealt a serious blow to my confidence in your "trust and safety" function.

Dear TPM

Thank you for writing to eBay in regard to a seller who you feel is selling counterfeit cards.

eBay does not have firsthand knowledge of the items that sellers list on our site. For this reason, we can't guarantee the accuracy of the listing information. eBay's role is simply to provide a place for buyers
and sellers to trade.

If you have a question about an item, we encourage you to ask the seller before placing your bid. Be sure to ask for specific item details, such as its age, authenticity, and condition.

To contact the seller, please follow these steps:

1. Go to the item page.
2. Click the "Ask seller a question" link.
3. Select the appropriate "Subject" from the drop-down menu.
4. Write your question to the seller and then click the "Send" button.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
JD

Customer concern: This listing was for a high-end baseball card. Shortly after I won this item, I received an email from another eBayer pointing out that the card is counterfeit, which is identifiable from the font on one of the letters on the front of the card. (If you know what to look for, which I did not, the counterfeit is obvious and easy to spot.) I looked at other cards that had been authenticated by industry leading companies, and confirmed that it was, in fact, counterfeit. I immediately notified the seller of this and he agreed without any response not to proceed with the transaction, which causes me to believe that he knew of the problem. The same eBayer that notified me that the card was counterfeit told me that he has also reported this numerous times to eBay. Yet, the seller relisted the card the very next day (280090192619), this time as a private listing so that no one can let the new buyer know that the card is counterfeit. I wrote to the seller asking him to end the listing, but he refused and said that if the card was counterfeit, "eBay would end the listing." So, this seller is knowingly listing a counterfeit card, and the new listing just closed for approximately $65. If nothing is done about this, after at least two members have notified you that the card is counterfeit, I will have lost a great deal of confidence in the eBay marketplace. I have copies of all of my emails back-and-forth with this seller and would be happy to forward them to you. Please let me know what will be done about this issue. Thank you for your attention.

Are his BGS-graded cards fakes too? Please let me know, I'm freaking out now.
