authentication_logo.gifWe're on the eve of the NFL Draft and I found something very interesting on NBA.com while surfing this morning. I went to one of my every-morning stops and noticed something different. On NBA.com, they have auctions and there's a bunch of game-used jerseys with the following wording:

"MeiGray Group, the Official Game-Worn Source of the NBA, offers collectors the highest standards of authenticity, integrity and reliability for an exciting array of game-worn and game-used items. Every game-worn and game-used item comes directly off the backs of the NBA’s greatest players and directly off the courts from the league’s most exciting events under the watchful eyes of an NBA or MeiGray Authentication Program representative.

"Every item offered by NBA And MeiGray is authenticated and registered into the NBA Authentication Program Database.  Every item is worthy of a Hall of Fame-caliber sports collection because every item is unconditionally guaranteed for life to be game-worn or game-used."

The authentication process is also described on the site: "Every item in the NBA Authenticated Program will be affixed with a tamper-proof hologram sticker (shown to the right) that includes a unique ID number. A certificate of authenticity will accompany each item and will also have a tamper-proof hologram sticker affixed with the same unique ID number to create a match. All NBA Authenticated items will be tracked by the NBA and available on NBA.com for fans and collectors to verify the authenticity of each item. The authenticity of all autographed and game-used items in the NBA Authenticated Program will be certified by an NBA or NBA Team representative."

Click here to check out the auctions. I haven't heard anything about this program yet, and will get in touch with the NBA to see if they are ready to announce anything yet, but this is a major step for NBA game-used jerseys. We all know that game-issued jerseys have been selling as game-used jerseys in many auctions and online for a long time and this program provides a way to make sure the jersey is actually game-used. This is a big move and should really help to clean up the market.

Also, I've been watching JaMarcus Russell since he was a freshman at LSU and the Raiders will be picking a great quarterback if they take him tomorrow. Everyone seems to be focusing on his arm strength right now...even implying that's all he's got, but he's a very good quarterback, who is smart and the most poised player I've seen in a long time. I've also been a Calvin Johnson fan for a long time so I don't think they can go wrong unless they take Brady Quinn.

Detroit is the team that's in a strange position. If the Raiders take Russell as expected, the Lions will face the choice of taking a receiver (Johnson) for the fourth time in five years or a much lesser player unless they can trade down. The positive side of all this is there are plenty of teams trying to get up in the draft to get Johnson. I'm sure Matt Millen will make the right choice, he always does (that was sarcastic).

The strength of this year's class appears to be at wide receiver, where Johnson, Ted Ginn Jr., Dwayne Bowe, Robert Meachem, Dwayne Jarrett,  and even Sidney Rice, Anthony Gonzalez and Steve Smith could all go in the first round, with at least the first four being locks.

Ft. Lauderdale Wrap-up, Mastro and Topps news
Posted by Steve

Sorry for the lateness of Wednesday's events, but Meet the Industry was very strong again. Donruss Playoff gave away its familiar black boxes and Upper Deck had some great giveaways also. The black boxes contained a printing plate from 2006 nfl rookies, which means every box had a 1-of-1 card, with chances at Reggie Bush, Vince Young, etc. Upper Deck had boxes with one pack of cards containing three cards and one signed card. I saw someone pull a Michael Jordan and someone pull a LeBron, with most of the others being baseball rookies.

Topps didn't have any big giveaways during Meet the Industry, but had a really interesting promotion during the week. Here's how it went: on Sunday night, all the retailers at the Topps party got a three-card pack of Allen & Ginter cards with Topps employees on them. During the rest of the week, the retailers would have to track down the Topps employee featured on their card in order to redeem them for a different Allen & Ginter card, numbered to 25. Great idea that really worked as I saw many dealers trying to find Topps employees at virtually every event I was at.

Wednesday night was the Florida Marlins game and, although I decided to stay home and get some work done, it sounds like I missed a great time. Major League Baseball hooked us up with the picnic area so it was a great chance to talk, eat and drink, while watching a great game.

I interviewed Doug Allen of Mastro Auctions during the business sessions and learned two major things. First, Mastro is going to do a live event during the National, with 60-70 elite items, and second, that they are going to really be doing a ton of video on their site. The live event will be loaded with amazing stuff and I got the vibe that it would be just the start of a new, live presence for the company and yet another key selling point to get acquire key collections for its auctions. The video presence is planned to be used on most key lots in future auctions and will take Mastro's web site and auction bidding to another level. By the way, with Doug Allen being the only major auction presence at Ft. Lauderdale, it sounds like he had a great trip and capitalized heavily. I'm disappointed more auction houses didn't attend because there's a ton of value in this trade conference. Finally, my interview with Doug will be on our site in the next few weeks.

70_D Matsuzaka.jpgIn other news, Topps has made two very important late additions to its 2007 Triple Threads Baseball product. First, Red Sox  pitching phenom Daisuke Matsuzaka will have three different Triple Relic cards. One features actual game-thrown baseballs from his first few spring training games. The die-cut paying tribute to his famous "Gyro Ball" pitch. Second, Barry Bonds will also have three Triple Relic cards. Every card will also have parallels - Sepia (numbered to 27), Emerald (numbered to 18), Gold (numbered to 9), Sapphire (numbered to 3) and Platinum (numbered to 1). Triple Threads ships the last week of May.

Tuesday in Ft. Lauderdale
Posted by Steve

Tuesday started off with Upper Deck founder and owner Richard McWilliam giving a "State of the Indusry" presentation. He outlined 10 goals the company is putting in place to improve the buying experience for collectors and retailers. Two of the highlights on that list included shipping products on time and reducing the number of and turnaround time with redemptions. Upper Deck also announced new distribution guidelines stating that retailers can only order products from one of 12 authorized distributors in the US or three in Canada, or directly from the company. No dealer-to-dealer sales will be allowed and the majority of sales must be to in-store customers. In turn, distributors will only be allowed to sell to brick-and-morter retail stores.

This will dramatically change the sale of products in online venues and some questioned if this was possible to police such a program. The changes will take place with SP Authentic Basketball.

The MLBPA announced there would be fewer products in 2008, with Topps and Upper Deck limited to 17 products each (down from 20 this season). This good news was soon lost though when retailers and the MLBPA's Judy Heeter argued about the rookie card designation. Retailers argued that the impact of the rookie card designation was minimized by products like Bowman that included prospects before other products albeit not true rookie cards. She eventually said, "Telling them to buy Bowman is not a smart choice," which I must have heard 30 times through the rest of the night.

The site for the 2008 Trade Conference was also formally announced. It will be held at the San Marcos Golf Resort in Phoenix from April 13-17. This also included a "name that show" contest with chances for attendees to rename the Hawaii Trade Conference because saying "Hawaii Trade Conference Mainland Edition" is way too difficult, even when you are sober. The winner gets a free registration for next year.

The eBay-sponsored charity auction also went smoothly, with 53 lots sold, including some really nice UDA Tiger and Jordan stuff, four Playoff Printing Plates framed pieces, some uncut card sheets from the Topps vault and a bunch of other autographed items.

The night ended at a place called Fat Tuesdays with me and a crew of dealers and distributors, and then at the Hard Rock, which was about 15 minutes away but took us 40 minutes to get to. I learned that the Canary Islands are off the coast of Moracco and not Spain, and all I can say about any of this is "No Mitch, don't do it." You really had to be there.

I've had trouble getting on the internet so far, which is why this is my first blog from Ft. Lauderdale. Sunday was registration and Donruss hosted a very nice party and brought in Miami Hurricane's tight end Greg Olsen to sign for everyone.

Next was the Upper Deck boat cruise for scholarship winners. We thought we might be risking our lives with the crazy winds, but it was intercoastal so it's more calm. It was a great way to start the week, especially since I didn't get sea sick.

After that I was off to a Topps party for retailers, where the videotaped a Topps Case Rip Party in which selected participants opened boxes of the upcoming Triple Threads Basketball. The event will be posted soon on the Topps TV portion of the company's website.

Monday was the Upper Deck Golf Tournament at Grande Oaks Golf Course. It's the same course that Caddyshack was filmed at and it was a tremendous course. We had stong wind and it was cold (and I'm from Wisconsin) for most of it. Upper Deck does this so well every year with prizes, gifts and promotion, and this year was no different. Everyone got a gopher headcover to remind us of the movie.

The big news of the day was the NFL confirmed that Topps, Upper Deck and Donruss Playoff all had their licenses renewed. There was speculation that the NFL might follow Major League Baseballs's lead and cut the number to two, but all three will produce football cards.

This was followed by a great evening event hosted by MLBPA, Topps and Upper Deck. The turnout for this event was really impressive, with almost all the 320 (roughly) attendees there. Tuesday marks the start of the business sessions and I'll write about some of those highlights in a bit.

I love April. It starts off with waiting for Mastro and Robert Edward previews to get up, then spending the rest of the month adding and subtracting stuff to your favorites and bidding on stuff in those auctions. Normally, Lelands would be included in this, but even I can't find out when their auction is this year (last year it was the same weekend as Robert Edward).

Last year, I bought the best Al Simmons bat in the world from Mastro, then followed it up with a Willie Mays bat and a huge wire photo lot from Robert Edward and a couple wire photo lots from Lelands. Call it a spending binge, but I prefer the term "investing." I'll refrain from totalling it up.

This year, there are plenty more incredible items, but I will be much more frugal. I'll definitely be following the Ted Williams 400th Home Run game-used bat and the Wilt Chamberlain Kansas game-used jersey in Mastro Auctions, but I don't have the funds to win items like that. I might go after the Hank Greenberg sidewritten bat or the Roberto Clemente All-Star bat, but they'll both probably go higher than I would pay. I'm definitely interested in the Mel Ott signed photo and the Pete Maravich signed checks lot, as well as the Jabbar game-used Lakers jersey. Bidding starts on April 9.

Robert Edward Auctions has 247 lots from the famous Barry Halper Collection and even if you can't afford most of the stuff, it's still amazing stuff. The Babe Ruth-signed balls are incredible and there's a lot of artwork and autographs, but the Brooks Robinson game-used stuff stands out to me. I could see adding the game-used bat to my "wall of bats."

National Championship game provides look at NBA future
Posted by Steve

I realize that it wasn't the nail biter that everyone had hoped for, but the NCAA Championship last night was a great game and display of talent. Any time you put that many future NBA players on the court at one time and they all generally play well, it's a good game. Greg Oden was amazing and we finally got to answer the question: what would this guy if he actually played a full game? Now he faces the choice of being the No. 1 pick or staying another year at Ohio State and trying to win a championship. It would be great to see him follow the Florida players last year and stay, but it's tough to pass up the millions.

The Florida trio of Corey Brewer, Al Horford and Joakim Noah accomplished their goal of coming back to school and repeating as champions, which was nice to see. Like I said, it would be great for college basketball if more players would follow their lead and stay at least a couple years. Think about how great the tourney would be next year if Kevin Durant and Oden both hung around. And don't be surprised if one of those Florida guards hang around with an NBA team...when you can shoot like that there's always a place for you.

Ohio State teammate Mike Conley also has a bright future and is already the best point guard in college basketball (Ty Lawson is a very close second), but he's insisted that he'll return to college. Ron Lewis might get a look with someone, but nobody else is close although not as far off as Jamar Butler's shots.

The most interesting part of all this is that while the Celtics, Bucks and Grizzlies are trying to lose to get more lottery balls and hopefully be one of the top two picks, they might get that coveted No. 1 spot and find neither Durant or Oden in the draft. I wouldn't bet on it, but I wouldn't be shocked if it happened. If they both come out, it'll be a tremendous year for trading cards and basketball in general. I'm assuming Topps and Upper Deck are salivating and getting their check books ready to sign these guys as exclusives.

Amazing Tour of Japan collection in SCP's June auction
Posted by Steve

Untitled-6.jpgI know there are a bunch of great auctions at the end of April and in May, but I'm pretty excited about SCP Auctions' next offering on June 5 at Sotheby's in New York.

I know several things about it: The Casey Stengel Collection; Alan Schlesinger's jersey collection; a private collection of game-used bats; the ball from the final out of the 1924 World Series signed by Walter Johnson; a vintage card collection with a T206 Eddie Plank; Lou Gehrig's circa-1931 Yankees home jersey; and a Tour of Japan collection with signed photos and balls. I've been lucky enough to see some of the items and can verify this is going to be a killer auction.

The Stengel Collection is full of World Series rings, contracts, his HOF induction plaque, hats, etc. The Schlesinger Collection has more than 100 game-worn basketball uniforms/jerseys, including Wilt Chamberlain's rookie uniform (yes, with the shorts), Bill Russell, Bob Cousy, Elgin Baylor, Willis Reed (from his legendary Game 7 performance vs. the Lakers), Jerry West, Pete Maravich, Julius Erving, Michael Jordan's rookie jersey, etc. It includes around 40 of NBA's top 50 players of all-time. I got to see a few of these at NBA Jam Session in Vegas and they are amazing.

Untitled-5.jpgFinally, the Tour of Japan collection is going to blow you away. The photos feature some of the best Babe Ruth signatures I've even seen... on photography that I've never seen. There's also plenty of Lou Gehrig and Jimmie Foxx signatures, along with signed items from the 1931 All-Star tour, the Ty Cobb Goodwill tour of 1928 and more. There are more than 200 photos and some of the earliest known signatures from Japanese Hall of Famers. The entire auction will have around 350 lots.

In other news, did you see what that Bobby Orr jersey in Classic Collectibles's auction ended at last night? It sold for $140,038 and the page had close to 9,000 views. That's an insane price for a hockey jersey and would imagine it's a record or close to a record (actually a 1967-68 Orr Bruins home jersey holds the record price of $179,654 from Lelands in the Spring of 2006...hey, Doug Drotman reads my blog!!!), but for a jersey that can be pinpointed to when he was drinking out of the Stanley Cup in 1972, it's probably a bargain. This 694-lot auction had 15 items that sold for more than $10,000 and was really loaded with more great items than you could shake a stick at. Sorry.

I'm off to watch O.J. Mayo, Eric Gordon and Derrick Rose in the McDonald's All-American Game tonight. If you don't know Mayo yet, you soon will when he's at USC for one year and then off to the NBA.

Strange phone call sparks day
Posted by Steve

Thanks for checking out the first entry of my blog. I'll be updating it regularly and it will include lots of different topics, like the auction circuit, new card products and even college and pro football and basketball.

rucker_park_schedule_2005-arton22394-240x162.jpgI've been a collector since I was six years old and have transformed through the years from card collecting to autographs, cancelled checks and game-used bats. I'm also a basketball nut who follows high school, college and pro and even travel to Harlem during the summer to watch the Rucker tournament (actually called the EBC) at the same courts Dr. J, Lew Alcindor, Connie Hawkins did battle against Joe Hammond and Earl Manigault.

I'm currently the pricing director and editorial auction director here at F+W Publications and we produce SCD, Tuff Stuff, Trade Fax and Card Trade. I've been here for 12 years now and done almost everything from launching and running SCD Authentic card grading, helping to launch SCD Authentic memorabilia authentication, putting together various books and writing for our fantasy sports publications.

During the past year I've been concentrating on building the www.sportscollectorsdigest web site into something that a person who follows the auction circuit very closely would need to check virtually every day. We're finally getting that strong corporate push we've been waiting for and will be adding a lot of new tools to the site, like blogs, video, forums and a few surprises I can't tell you about just yet.

I'll be encouraging you to participate in my blog and comment on the words you read. Strong opinions and your participation are what will make my blog really fun and interesting so chime in.

On the news side of things, Topps is in Louisville, KY, this week for the 2007 McDonald's High School All American Game. It will produce cards on site of the 24 men and 24 woman that play in the game and distribute them to attendees, with each receiving one male and one female. The only way to get the cards is at the game and since Freedom Hall seats around 19,000 people that's all that will exist. Top names at the game include: O.J. Mayo, Eric Gordon, Derrick Rose and Kevin Love.

Finally, this is just too good to pass up and it may be one of those "you had to be there" things, but I just got a phone call from a collector who was unhappy about the redemption card he received from a Fleer product. He insisted he had analyzed the code and that his card was for Michael Jordan and made me write down the code (RUMNJH5...). He then provided his case. "RU" was used on all redemptions, "M" is for Michael Jordan, "N" is for North Carolina, "J" is the 10th letter in the alphabet, which is when.....you get the point. I think it was code breaker from The Pentagon or the guy from NUMBERS, but taking Jackson State to win it all in your NCAA office pool would have been less of a reach. Sometimes it's best to let your ringing phone go to voicemail.
